The Central Plateau

From Port-Louis, take the south-bound road to Domaine Les Pailles. In a horse-drawn buggy or in a Jeep, you will discover a natural reserve created at the bottom of the valley where deer, monkeys and kestrels live undisturbed. Superb, tasty cuisines are available in four different restaurants at lunch time.

Hit the road for Eureka, a patrician house, typical of the colonial era, and which has been preserved in a leafy park overlooking the deep gorge of a river in Moka.

Your next stop is the Glass Gallery in Phoenix where used glass is smelt before being blown into most delicate shapes.

At the Textile Museum in Floreal, an essential part of the history of mankind - clothing - is displayed. Duty-free shops, next door, stock clothes, jewellery and diamonds. Take your pick!

To finish the day, go back to nature by driving to the Trou aux Cerfs in Curepipe. As you go along the mouth of this extinct volcano, you will have an unforgettable view of Mauritius, especially of its superb blue mountain ranges.

The South

This is an area brimming with quiet wonders, from lush green parks stretching along, like the Domaine du Chasseur to moist river valleys and vast sheets of blue water lapping sheer basalt cliffs.

At the Domaine du Chasseur, you can watch wild boar and deer in their natural surroundings. The rarest falcons in the world, the kestrels, fit amongst a few remaining specimens of the indigenous forest. Soon after lunch time, you can watch these birds being fed. Domaine du Chasseur.

Drive through historic Mahebourg and on to La Vanille Reserve des Mascareignes next to Riviere des Anguilles. Initially, a crocodile farm, the park, now, is home also to the biggest world collection of Aldabra tortoises. Deer, wild boar and monkeys ramble freely around. The park also houses a huge and dazzling collection of stuffed butterflies.

"La Route du The" leads to a blender’s at Bois Cheri. At the factory and the attached museum, you will discover the intricacies of tea production and sample a wide variety of blends. Now access Grand Bassin, the sacred lake of Hindu pilgrimage and mysticism.

The various Black River Gorge viewpoints offer panoramic vistas of the South and the West. At Chamarel, turn left and drive down casual hairpins to Baie du Cap. From there, go to Le Morne where, it is believed, the last slaves found refuge. At the foot of this impressive mountain, the Paradis Hotel has laid out a magnificient 18-hole green next to the turquoise lagoon. Alternatively, when at Baie du Cap, turn left and drive to the brand new Le Telfair Resort at Bel Ombre where a former colonial mansion has been converted into a superb restaurant. There, again, golf links, terraced out to the sea, will make you understand, that this activity is part of the Mauritian tradition since 1844...
